Teacher Antara

Antara Datta started learning Kathak at the tender age of five from Srimati Laxmi Bannerjee in Kolkata, India. She holds a double diploma in Kathak from the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad in Kolkata and the Prayag Sangeet Samiti in Allahabad. She received advanced training in the Lucknow ghara-na of Kathak from "Sringar Mani" Srimati Anuradha Nag (a senior disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj and the artistic director of the Ta-rangini School of dance in San Jose, California). Antara is the founder and artistic director of the Anga Kala Kathak Academy, which has branches in the Pacific Northwest,North East and Central Ohio and also in Pittsburg, PA. She held an adjunct faculty position of Kathak at the Cornish College of Arts in Seattle, Washington in Fall 2010 and then at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio in Winter, 2014 and also taught master classes at University of Akron, OH in Feb 2017. She is a recipient of ALPHA women award in Mar, 2017 by Elite Women Around the globe for her contribution in the field of dance.

Charu has been involved with Anga Kala Kathak Academy since 2012 helping oversee its operational and production aspects as well as training students across beginner and intermediate levels under the able guidance and direction of Smt. Antara Datta. Charu received her initial kathak training in India at the Natya Institute of Kathak under the tutelage of late Guru Smt. Maya Rao. She has been fortunate to attend workshops and study from pioneers of kathak and presently continues her learning with Smt. Antara Datta and Sringar Mani Guru Smt. Anuradha Nag. Involved with classical dance since childhood, she hopes to pass on her learnings and appreciation of the art form to her students.

Charu also teaches at other Eastside studios and schools.
