In the first half, we unleash the remarkable story-telling power of Kathak in a poignant depiction of Lord Krishna's childhood and adolescence. In the second half, we embark on a historical journey exploring Sufi and Persian influence on the evolution of Kathak. We conclude with an exquisite 'jugalbandi' between Kathak, Manipuri and Ballet, Sarod - Soumya Chakraverty.

The program will feature Kathak performance by Antara Datta with live accompaniment by Pandit Ramesh Misra on Sarangi and Chaz Hastings on Tabla.

A special attraction is a solo vocal concert by Mitali Banerjee Bhaumik, accompanied by Pandit Ramesh Misra on Sarangi and Pandit Samir Chatterjee on Tabla.

Smt. Anuradha Nag had her initial training from Nataraj Parimal Krishna and later from veteran gurus-the legendary Padmavibushan Pandit Birju Maharaj and his foremost disciple Pandit Vijai Shankar. She passed the Nritya Prabhakar with distinction at the tender age of 13. She stood 1st in the Pashchim Banga Nikhil Bharatiyo Competition. She taught Kathak at all levels at the Padatik Dance Center in Kolkata and choreographed for the school’s festivals. She has also worked with the mentally challenged children at the Manovikas Kendra in Kolkata for 5 years giving them joy through dance. Before making USA her home she was a recommended artiste for the Sangeet Natak Akademi as well as the Indian Council of Cultural Relations. She had the privilege of working with great gurus and choreographers such as Pt. Birju Maharaj, Smt. Kumudini Lakhia, Kalanidhi Narayanan and Prof Deitmar Seyffert of Germany. She was awarded the title "Sringar Mani" in Kal ke Kalakar, Mumbai, India.

Nrityanjali is a newly formed Kathak group to showcase real, traditional Kathak in the Puget Sound area. It is the production wing of Antara Datta’s school of Kathak.
“Katha kahe so kathak” – is a popular saying. This ancient art of India derived its name “Kathak” from “Katha” , the art of storytelling. The Kathak dancers were excellent narrators and storytellers, and they interpreted incidents from the great epics with gestures and music.

The Northwest Folklife Festival is an annual festival of ethnic, folk, and traditional art, crafts, and music that takes place over the Memorial Day weekend in Seattle, Washington at Seattle Center. It brings together an estimated 250,000 visitors, 1,800 volunteers, and more than 6,000 musicians, dancers, and other performers. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.
